Lao Tzu (also spelled Laozi or Lao-Tze) was an ancient Chinese philosopher and mystic, traditionally considered the founder of Taoism. He is best known as the author of the Tao Te Ching (also Dao De Jing), a timeless text that explores the nature of the Tao — the ineffable Way or underlying principle of existence — and how to live in harmony with it.

Lao Tzu’s quote, “Stop thinking, and end your problems,” points to the fact that most of our suffering comes from overthinking — from constantly judging, worrying, and imagining things that aren’t happening right now.

When we stop getting caught up in our thoughts and return to the present moment, our mind becomes still. In that stillness, the problems created by our thinking — fear, anxiety, confusion — dissolve. It doesn’t mean to stop using your mind altogether, but to stop identifying with every thought. Peace comes when you let the mind rest.
